Chairman Peter Elder on Minneapolis, ICE and Sanctuary City Policy

No matter what side of the political aisle you are on, a human life is a human life, and this was a tragedy that never should have happened. Our thoughts are with the families and all those affected in Minneapolis. 

However, we must acknowledge the root causes behind the circumstances that brought federal agents into that city in the first place. Without the massive influx of illegal immigrants permitted under the Biden administration’s open-border policies, and without Democrat sanctuary policies embraced by leaders in Minneapolis and other cities that prevent local law enforcement from enforcing immigration laws, federal ICE agents would never have had to conduct enforcement operations on the streets of Minneapolis.

Sanctuary cities that tie the hands of local police forces leaving federal agencies to step in alone — that is the unfortunate, yet predictable, outcome of Democrat immigration policy. We stand firmly with law enforcement at every level, including the dedicated men and women of ICE, who are enforcing our laws under difficult circumstances and with limited cooperation. It is time to secure our border, end sanctuary policies, and restore respect for the rule of law — actions that could prevent this from ever occurring again.
